Adventures Among AntsA Global Safari with a Cast of Trillions [Hardcover]byMark W Moffett W M Author Moffett Books
I have read several books on ants, with Moffett's edition being the latest. Several reviewers have commented on the amount of autobiographical content in Moffett's book compared to technical content about ants. If you purchased the book not expecting to read about Moffett's life and travels, I can certainly see that criticism. However, Moffett is substantially easier to access compared to the more technical tomes like those from Holldobler whose books are the undisputed masters of the topic. So one should just consider which end of the spectrum they fancy their ant books; both choices are good ones.My main comment about Moffett is that I greatly enjoyed the choice of characters. There really is no such thing as "an ant book" - you get books about specific species of ants. With Moffett you are given what personally would consider a short list the more interesting players - driver ("army ants"), marauder, weaver, leaf cutter, Amazon, and Argentine. Each has their own - sometimes wildly different - style of food collection, fighting, nesting, and communication. The marauder ant chapter alone had me researching many things and trying to find pictures of their work. And you can pick this book up and read a chapter at your whim, not worrying about losing anything by setting it aside for a while between readings.
But I will say that I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 for the autobiographic parts. Not so much because those parts exist, but because sometimes those sections veered off into topics completely unrelated to the ant species of that chapter. Small matter really, just distracted me at times. I do recommend this book - it is very informative.

Adventures Among AntsA Global Safari with a Cast of Trillions [Hardcover]byMark W Moffett W M Author Moffett Books Reviews
Another Public Radio interview that leads to a book purchase. My reaction to this very well made and illustrated book comes in two equaly interesting areas of focus the Ants, and the author. Of the Ants It has been a true adventure to learn of a creature we mostly overlook unless needing removal from our kitchens, that comes in such varieties and lives such complex and envoled lives. Who knew, for example, that those of us in California were living in (or at least with) the "Very Large Colony" of Argentine Ants that covers most of the state, that some ants can essentially sky dive, while others can swim, some modify their environment by road building, or sew leafs together to make shelters, while others are into farming other insects or planting and tending food crops. Of the Author In writing about the varioius ant spcies he has studied, the author shares many of his personal experiences. We learn of his childhood interest that leads to his lifes work, his travels in many of the most exotic places of the world, those he has worked with, and the lady who became his wife. The book is at once a user friendly scientific discription of a very unique part of our world, and the story of the developement and commitment of one of those singular scientists who do the very hard work in basic research that advances our undertanding of our world while educating and entertaing the rest of us. The diversity and complexity of life continues to amaze and fill one with questions. This excellant book adds to that amazement.
One of the most interesting and well written books I have read and... I am not a scientist! Even if you don't care anything about ants, you will come out with a whole new interest and respect for these little critters and their importance to our planet. I was fascinated by the author's story, his dedication and his breadth of knowledge. The relationships in the ant world mimic those amongst 'we earthlings' ! One is guaranteed to come away with a far greater understanding of the significance of each and every critter in our world and further opens our mind to ask further questions. A brilliant book.
Following hearing an interview with the author on NPR, I had to order a copy of Adventures with Ants. It sounded like a real adventure and discovery story. And it is! Hard as it may be to believe that ants could be interesting, they become absolutely fascinating page after page. Stunning photos, too! I heartily recommend Adventures with Ants for anyone with an interest in both naturalism, a touch of mystery, a dose of "What the heck are they doing now?" and a dash of interest in animal behavior. Sure, I had an ant farm as a kid (the author had gotten one for his child who quickly lost interest but the author's interest persisted) and had some interest -- which I also quickly lost.
Interesting note! My family doctor's daughter had an ant farm at age 10, and announced that "Some day I'm going to discover a new kind of ant and name them after me!" That daughter, now in her late teens, got a copy of this book from her father a few weeks ago, and has been enthralled.
Who would have ever thought anyone who's ever gone on a picnic or smashed these small black bugs while they were after the kitchen sugarbowl would have anything good to say about an ant!! Recommended reading -- with stunning photographs!
